Editorial. This week in Bali

I’m not sure what’s happening with Google weather lately, but I don’t think it’s good for business. If you check the weather on your phone, or at least the notifications that pop up on my phone, you would think it is raining here every day. For some reason every day and night weather notifications pop up, on my phone at least, and I hear many more, saying there’s a 40%, 50%, even 70% chance of rain. The funny thing is that it hasn’t rained here for what seems like months, but there it is, 50% chance of rain today, again on my phone. I thought it may be because we are in Badung regency and that it extends right up the mountain, but no, I am in Canggu and it says Dalung 50% rain. I think it has rained here once in the last month. This is so ridiculous and people checking from outside must think the weather is terrible around here. How wrong could that be? It has been absolutely beautiful weather here in southern Bali for the past couple of months. Yes, as I have always said, technology is amazing when it actually works.

Footy fever has struck again with the World Cup kicking off last weekend. That was quick. As a friend pointed out the other day, where did the last four years just go? Who knows. Football, or soccer, has again taken centre stage on most TVs and screens at the bars, homes and village kubu around the island. Some of the qualifying rounds are at unearthly late hours, but many are manageable early or mid morning starts. With more teams competing this year―a starting group of 48 national teams, resulting in 104 games in total, the tournament runs for another month, finishing on July 19. So, buckle in and get used to it, World Cup fever is going to be around for some time and building as we go. May the best team win!

I would also like to give thanks to Litut Bar on Jl Mertanadi for saving & returning my lost sunnies, btw a good place to catch the footy!

Last Friday night, we stopped down at Desa Kitsune, where the talented Italian ladies, Gioli & Assia were spinning tunes and playing their instruments, but man, it was so busy, we didn’t last long. After, we passed by The Shady Pig, who were celebrating their 6th Anniversary. Personally, I didn’t have a plan to stay long but after coming across Pak Jonathon behind the bar everything became way too much fun and a little too blurry. Shady Pig started off as a speakeasy literally just up the road during the height of Covid. Yes, it started life as a hidden prohibition-style bar during the real lock downs of the period in the year 2020. How cool is that! It was the real thing. Not often you can say that about anything nowadays. But after Covid it was a little too hidden from public view and kind of slowed to a trickle before closing and moving to its present location. What a master stroke that was. It hasn’t looked back since and is now one of the busiest spots in town. So, drinks, laughs and the fun continued to the wee hours and Shady’s anniversary was put to bed in style.

Have a good weekend friends.
